Since obtaining his Juris Doctorate from Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law in 1985, David has devoted his life to legal service and advocacy. As a member of the Dean’s Advisory Committee and as the Planned Giving Consultant for the law school, David is continuously supporting the various initiatives that make Cecil C. Humphreys a school of excellence.

CECIL C. HUMPHREYS SCHOOL OF LAW

In August of 1981, David was admitted to the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law at Memphis State University. Over the next four-and-a-half years, David was challenged with surviving the rigors of law school, attending school four nights a week while working full-time, and building a career with Xerox, and, later, in the investment world. Somehow, through this busy season of life, David was able to start a family with his wife, Beth.

David’s commitment to the law was a huge factor in what would be the most important career change of his life.

In February of 1984, David was tasked with the choice of accepting a promotion with and relocating with Xerox but that would correspond with having to drop out of law school. David ultimately chose to seek a career in the investment industry while continuing his studies to obtain his Juris Doctorate.

Living out the words and spirit of Robert Frost, David took “the road less traveled” and chose to pursue what has become his life’s work: a career as an investment advisor and attorney. David graduated from Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law in December 1985, passing the bar on his initial attempt in February 1986.

For over 35 years, David has supported the school with annual gifts and periodic contributions.

In 2021, David was invited by Dean Katharine Schaffzin to serve as a member of the Dean’s Advisory Committee. Also in 2021, David was asked to serve as the Planned Giving Consultant for the law school to help provide advice and counsel to supporters of the law school who may be interested in making legacy gifts to the organization.

In 2022, David was approached by the university to endow a Chair of Excellence, permanently occupied by the Dean of the law school, and support various initiatives.

In 2024, David joined the Business in Blue podcast to discuss the importance of public education and how a career focused on positively impacting others has led to both personal fulfillment and professional success.

Pillars of Excellence Awards

On August 24th, 2024, David Pickler was honored as a Friend of the Law School alongside other distinguished attorneys at the Pillars of Excellence Awards hosted by the University of Memphis. This prestigious event recognized outstanding professionals who have made significant contributions to the practice of law and their communities.

Before accepting his award, David was honored with a remarkable film that included tributes from former Superintendent of Collierville Schools, John Aitken, and CEO of the Orpheum Theatre Group, Brett Batterson. Their words highlighted David’s unwavering dedication to education, the arts, and the betterment of the Memphis community.

In addition to honoring the exceptional work of these legal professionals, the Pillars of Excellence Awards serve a greater purpose. All proceeds from the evening are directed to supporting the University of Memphis Law School and providing scholarships for its students. This initiative helps to cultivate the next generation of legal minds, ensuring that the legacy of excellence continues.

The David Pickler Dean's Professorship

In 2025, the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law announced the establishment of the David Pickler Dean’s Professorship, made possible through a $250,000 gift from David Pickler. Through a grant from the State of Tennessee, the University of Memphis matched the gift in full, creating a $500,000 endowment as part of Governor Bill Lee’s initiative to support the university’s prestigious Carnegie R-1 designation.

This endowment provides enduring support for students and faculty while equipping the Dean with additional resources to address key priorities throughout the year for generations to come.

David joined Ed Brundick of Pickler Law and Dean Jim Strickland on an episode of Bar Essentials to discuss one of Memphis’ most important institutions, the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. Their conversation highlighted the school’s rich history, nationally recognized facilities, and the important role scholarship support plays in attracting and retaining top legal talent.
