Since obtaining his Juris Doctorate from Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law in 1985, David has devoted his life to legal service and advocacy. As a member of the Dean’s Advisory Committee and as the Planned Giving Consultant for the law school, David is continuously supporting the various initiatives that make Cecil C. Humphreys a school of excellence.

In August of 1981, David was admitted to the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law at Memphis State University. Over the next four-and-a-half years, David was challenged with surviving the rigors of law school, attending school four nights a week while working full-time, and building a career with Xerox, and, later, in the investment world. Somehow, through this busy season of life, David was able to start a family with his wife, Beth.

David’s commitment to the law was a huge factor in what would be the most important career change of his life.

In February of 1984, David was tasked with the choice of accepting a promotion with and relocating with Xerox but that would correspond with having to drop out of law school. David ultimately chose to seek a career in the investment industry while continuing his studies to obtain his Juris Doctorate.

Living out the words and spirit of Robert Frost, David took “the road less traveled” and chose to pursue what has become his life’s work: a career as an investment advisor and attorney. David graduated from Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law in December 1985, passing the bar on his initial attempt in February 1986.

For over 35 years, David has supported the school with annual gifts and periodic contributions.

In 2021, David was invited by Dean Katharine Schaffzin to serve as a member of the Dean’s Advisory Committee. Also in 2021, David was asked to serve as the Planned Giving Consultant for the law school to help provide advice and counsel to supporters of the law school who may be interested in making legacy gifts to the organization.

In 2022, David was approached by the university to endow a Chair of Excellence, permanently occupied by the Dean of the law school, and support various initiatives.
