Winston Churchill once stated that “we make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.” We are inheritors of a legacy forged by generations who embrace community leadership and civic engagement as essential ingredients of citizenship.
Pickler Wealth Advisors was founded on the principle that success is only achieved when we are viewed as significant in the lives of the clients and communities we serve. We have been blessed to have the support of our amazing clients in our firm’s twin pillars of advisory excellence and community engagement. Pickler Wealth Advisors reflects the passion for the community of its founder David Pickler. David has built his personal and professional life on the principles of community service, civic leadership, and philanthropic investment. Because of his hands-on work in the community, David was recently named among the“25 Who Shaped Memphis” – a list containing the most influential individuals from the past 25 years who helped Memphis become what it is today.
David has been working tirelessly as The Children’s Advocate for over 25 years, fighting for the best public education possible for every child. David’s journey as a proponent of public schools started when he became a PTA volunteer in 1989. This crucial decision led him to a 16-year membership on the Shelby County Board of Education. As his dedication to the school children of Memphis grew, so did his passion for public education on a national level. After serving as a school board member for the Tennessee School Boards Association, David was elected President of the National School Boards Association in 2013, and through his leadership, helped transform the organization into a strong, relevant and impactful voice for public education and the 90,000 school board members serving this country. Because public education is a vital national security interest and the future of America desperately depends on it, David’s passion for equity and excellence is perpetual as well as his allegiance to the 50 million public school children. In these times of unprecedented challenge and exponential change, he is leading the fight in ceasing the privatization and profitization of public schools; well-funded movements that would ultimately end the promise of public education. As part of the campaign to promote public education, David helped NSBA launch its Army of Advocates, a movement that gained over 5 million members in under a year. Also established under his guidance was the “Stand Up 4 Public Schools” red wristband program; a simple way for people to show their support for public education.
David has also been actively involved with Memphis Oral School for the Deaf where he organized and executed the highly successful Capital Campaign that resulted in the construction of the first permanent home in the nearly 50 year history of MOSD. David was asked to join the MOSD Board in 2000 with a goal of restructuring the school’s financial operations in order to facilitate the identification and development of a permanent home. After years of dedicated work, David was able to negotiate an agreement with Kingsway Christian Church in Germantown, Tennessee that would permit MOSD to build their home on the beautiful Kingsway campus. Over the next twelve months, David organized a group of Board and school volunteers in a campaign that resulted in over $2,000,000 raised. On April 5, 2007, the children of MOSD walked into their beautiful new school. David later led an effort to raise the additional $125,000 necessary to build a playground appropriate for the children’s unique needs. Under his leadership, MOSD grew the endowment to well over $3,000,000. David and his family have personally donated and committed over $250,000 to the school. As part of MOSD’s 50th Anniversary Celebration, the Pickler family was honored as Charter Members of the MOSD Hall of Fame.
David’s passion for our community is demonstrated though his dedication to community service, volunteerism, and leadership development. David has been an active volunteer in the Boy Scouts of America for over two decades. He has served as Cub Master, Boy Scout leader, and as Council Vice President for the Chickasaw Council. He has served on the national staff for the past three Boy Scout National Jamborees and is the National Boy Scout Council Representative. He has chaired the biennial Scout Base since 2000. Under David’s leadership, Scout Base has grown to become America’s largest council sponsored event delivering “Scouting at its Best” to over 15,000 scouts.
Long recognized as the outstanding community service organization in the City of Germantown, the Kiwanis Club delivers excellence in supporting the children of our area. During his year as President, David earned recognition as Distinguished Club President and the Germantown Club was recognized as the outstanding club in the District. David served as Governor of the Great and Historic Louisiana-Mississippi-West Tennessee District for 2007-2008. As Governor, David established the first permanent District Major Emphasis Project, an initiative to place at least one Automated External Defibrillator in every school in Louisiana, Mississippi, and West Tennessee.
In order that his philanthropic efforts may be sustained, David has established the Pickler Foundation. This foundation is dedicated to supporting children’s charities and educational initiatives throughout our community. The foundation will be endowed on an annual basis through donations from Pickler Wealth Advisors and the Pickler Law Firm. It is David’s intent to leave a legacy founded upon his beliefs of community investment and civic engagement.
